The Evans Evolutionary Morphology Lab explores the many aspects of biology that influence the shape or morphology of animals - evolution, development and function.

About the EvoMorph Lab

We look at embryology, biomechanics and fossils to understand why animals have evolved the way they have, and find out what constrains them.

From our work we can predict the direction of evolution, reconstruct the diets of fossil mammals, and show how long it takes to evolve from the size of a mouse to the size of an elephant. Using synchrotron imaging and 3D printing we can bring fossils back to life and reveal their secrets.

The main picture above shows the teeth of the crabeater seal Lobodon carcinophaga - its wave-like teeth filter krill (but not crabs).

Our logo shows the tooth of a leopard seal Hydrurga leptonyx - it also filter-feeds krill with its trident-shaped teeth, but is more famous for feeding on penguins.
